IX ISHPMIE
International Symposium on Hazard, Prevention and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions
Cracow, Poland, 22-27 July 2012
WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL 9TH ISHPMIE WEB- SITE
You are invited to the Royal City of Cracow (in Polish: Krakow) for the 9th International Symposium of Hazards, Prevention and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions (9th ISHPMIE) between 22 and 27 July 2012. Roots of the Symposium reach far into the past. ISHPMIE was founded in 1996 as a joined meeting of Dust Explosion Colloquia (Baranow 1984, Jadwisin 1986, Szczyrk 1988, Porąbka – Kozubnik 1990, Pułtusk 1993, Shenyang 1994) and Specialists Meeting on Fuel-Air Explosions (Montreal, 1981). The first ISHPMIE was organized in 1996 in Bergen, then it was followed by meetings in Schaumburg (1988), Tsukuba (2000), Bourges (2002), Cracow (2004), Halifax (2006), St. Petersburg (2008), Yokohama (2010). Now the Symposium is coming back to Cracow.
Why the same city for a second time?
First of all because this is an exceptional city. Cracow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River (Polish: Wisła), the city dates back to the 7th century.
Second, Cracow has traditionally been one of the leading centers of Polish academic, cultural, and artistic life and is one of Poland's most important economic centers. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596. Cracow was never destroyed, still has an original medieval center. Cracow, the city of Nicolaus Copernicus and in modern time – of Pope John Paul II, is full of tourists the whole year long. The venue for the ISHPMIE will be Collegium Novum, the 18th century building of the Jagiellonian University (see link Venue).
